XP does support a method for hiding or revealing user accounts in the logon screen. from online help I have tried:Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL (x2) to bring up some background logon screen. Basically, its own cooling components were inadequate, and the graphics card overheated after a period of 6 months. Unfortunately, it's entirely possible that your original user account is corrupted because it shut down incorrectly.. Is it this one? Thank you for your information, which I tried and was successful.

- I deleted the existing user names (2), and substituted another.
- So I cant even set up a new user account and not even sure how to check if I have administrative powers.

You almost had me, but I've outfoxed you this time! Of course, as soon as walked away from the laptop for two minutes the hibernation mode kicked in and it locked up again. When I boot in safe mode there is no login page a popup apears saying if I continue I will be using the computer in safe mode or alternatively I can Not sure what TweakUI "tweaked" in the background -- but it turned on the Windows Logon Screen with nothing there.
