However, whatever I did do, must have removed the components that were conflicting with my Office 2007 and now I can open all documents on word, excel etc. This will prevent Word from loading its add-ins. Marvelous Windows! After some recent MS security updates forced a reboot of my (unattended) machine with a couple of Word docs open, attempting to open a Word doc from file explorer would open Suddenly, yesterday, I tried to open a Word doc and to my surprise the Word installer opened up and started trying to install Word. My .doc files were set to be opened by notepad. Join our site today to ask your question. This will open Word in Safe Mode. Uncheck the trouble-making add-in and click OK.
I can change the extensions of my Word documents to .docx and they open fine with a double click.
